5 Reasons Your Skin Looks Dull - and How to Get a Glowing Complexion
5 Reasons Your Skin Looks Dull - and How to Get a Glowing Complexion
Maybe some day we'll all want matte, powdery skin. But for now, we're more interested in adjectives like luminous, glowing, and dewy. Skin with that ineffable glow is thought to be difficult to obtain. It seems to come from eight hours of sleep, a well-balanced chi, and inner beauty.

But good news for those of us short on any of the above and suffering from dull skin: We’ve identified the main road blocks standing between your skin and that elusive lit-from-within-glow.

Here are five of the biggest reasons your skin looks dull:
1. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM UV RAYS

The sun’s UV rays extract moisture from your skin and can leave it feeling rough and flaky. Excessive exposure to the sun will mute your skin tone, while speeding up the aging process.

Always remember to protect your skin with high SPF sunscreen when you head outside.
1. You're forgetting to exfoliate.

If you wash your face twice a day, great! But there's a very crucial step you need to add: exfoliation.

Dryness is the most common cause of dull skin, and exfoliating creates a fresh canvas that allows topical products to penetrate better. Just remember to keep the process gentle on your skin to avoid causing inflammation or irritation.
2. STRESSFUL SITUATIONS

When you’re stressed, your body releases stress hormones. These hormones send your organs and glands into overdrive which can:

  • Cause breakouts
  • Slow down your skin’s natural regeneration process
  • Dull your skin tone
2. ...or you're forgetting to moisturize.

On top of exfoliation, your complexion might be calling out for something else: moisture. The demands that we place on our skin cause cracks in its surface, which translate as dullness. Using a moisturizer fills in those fissures by adding lipids, the natural fats of the skin, which seal up the gaps between the skin cells, presenting a smooth, reflective surface.

How you apply it matters too. Apply your moisturizer in gentle, upward strokes to boost blood circulation and stimulate the cells around your face and neck. This will bring oxygen to the surface of your skin, making it look nourished and healthy.
3. You're dehydrated — and so is your skin.

Most of us tend to think of dehydration as a short term problem solved by a glass of water, but dehydration also affects you in ways that go beyond the cosmetic. Skin cells are composed of mostly water, so they operate best in a hydrated environment. That means that they can still perform basic operations when water content is low, but, this deficiency will manifest in one of three ways: Dehydrated skin can include epidermal dehydration, dermal dehydration or both. Epidermal (top layer of skin) dehydration is indicated by fine lines. Scales may form in the case of more severe, chronic surface dehydration. Dermal (deep skin) dehydration causes depletion of the dermis and will ultimately result in deeper wrinkles that are visible on the surface of the skin, as well sagging skin.

Long story short: If you don't want wrinkles, drink up.
3. LACK OF SLEEP

Regular, adequate sleep helps promote the production of your natural growth hormones for your cells and collagen levels.

Without enough sleep your skin cells won’t regenerate as quickly and efficiently as usual, leaving you with rough and dull skin.
4. TOO MANY DEAD SKIN CELLS

When dead skin cells build up on your face they diffuse the light around you and make your skin appear dull.

Remember to exfoliate regularly to gently remove any dead skin cells and reveal your healthy, light-reflecting skin underneath.
4. You're super stressed.

If none of this has been clicking with you so far, maybe it's less about what's going on in your body and more about what's going on in your brain. Stress plays a large role in brilliance of your skin — or the lack thereof. Stress causes an increase in cortisol, which can affect blood flow to the skin and skin repair. Translation: Whatever deadline, argument or frustration it is you're holding onto could be what's standing between you and lustrous skin.
5. CIGARETTES

Among other issues, smoking impairs your circulation dramatically. This prevents oxygenated blood from reaching your skin, meaning it isn’t getting the nutrients it needs to regenerate and maintain its glow.

Other problems such as broken blood vessels and dark circles under the eyes are common in smokers. This is mostly due to an overload of toxins in the body.
5. You need more sleep.

Anything that keeps you up at night is getting in the way of your best skin, whether it's stress or not. Sleep is the body's restorative time, when your skin cells repair themselves and regenerate. If that period is shortened or altered, skin cells cannot perform at their optimum, leading to circulatory changes including dark eye circles, pallor, dry, flaky, less hydrated skin, and changes in oil production and skin cell exfoliation. Just one more reason to head to bed early each night.

Your skin is much more than just your body’s largest organ, it’s the most important feature of your face.

Your skin also directly reflects the overall state of your health: Glowing and blemish-free skin is a sign that you are doing well all over, while dull and sallow skin often signifies the opposite.

So, before you apply another layer of makeup, take a step back and look at what the causes of dull skin might be.

What does DMAE and Blue Green Algae do for your skin?

DMAE is a rich organic topical treatment results in almost instantaneous benefits. The skin looks firmer, lifted, less lined, and smoother. If a pea-sized drop of a DMAE-containing lotion is spread on one side of the face, gently rubbed into the nasolabial fold, around the eye, forehead, under the chin and on the neck, results can be seen in about 20 minutes. The side of the face and jaw line with the DMAE will appear more contoured, the eye will be open wider, the nasolabial fold lessened. The effect is dramatic. There will also be an immediate reduction in lines and wrinkles. DMAE is also outstanding in tightening up the dimpled skin on the back of the thighs and the upper arms.

If the idea of putting algae onto your body grosses you out, well, I would say turn away now, but you really shouldn't. Blue green algae contains vitamin E, selenium and tyrosine, which are all known for their powerful anti-aging effects. The antioxidants present in tyrosine eliminate free radicals and slow down the aging of skin cells. Blue green algae is also a wonderful source of chlorophyll, which has cleansing properties, and it also helps your skin retain moisture, which is a major key to maintaining the appearance of smoother, hydrated, dewy looking skin.

You should address the concerns of dull skin through organic ingredients that treat the skin, not more makeup. That's why we created Glow Serum, it's packed with organic DMAE, blue green algae, aloe vera, white willow and neem, to reduce dullness and give skin extra life, glow and brightness.

Glow Serum contains organic aloe vera. Aloe Vera is typically used when you get a little too much sun and need some relief. However, Aloe Vera has multiple benefits for your skin. It contains antioxidants, enzymes, Vitamins A and C, and it is highly anti-inflammatory. The enzymes in it can also help exfoliate the skin to make it smoother.  Its naturally occurring nutrients and moisturizing elements help to increase collagen production, firm up skin and plump out wrinkles. Antioxidants found within the Aloe Vera protect skin from the damage caused by free radicals and can also reduce the look of age spots for an even, more balanced complexion. It’s no wonder that it’s been a superstar beauty essential for centuries.

Our vegan and cruelty-free serum is formulated with organic white willow. With its powerful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties, white willow bark extract is something to consider when it comes to healthy and glowing skin. A natural exfoliator and a remedy for acne, this extract is one of those natural and organic ingredients that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Fighting the free radicals with its antioxidant properties, white willow bark extract is a natural boost when it comes to skin rejuvenation. When applied topically, the extract has anti-aging properties, which means that it helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and fights the oxidative stress. Tannins and astringent properties of the willow bark contribute to overall health of the skin.

Glow Serum contains organic Neem. Neem is a versatile plant with many health benefits. In fact, the Neem tree has been acknowledged as the “Wonder Tree” because each part of the tree -from its leaves, bark, seeds, flowers, to its fruit, exudes beneficial properties that can be used for different skin care purposes.

Neem delays the obvious signs of aging of the skin, thanks to its regenerative properties. Neem also reduces skin pigmentation, thus assisting in getting rid of dark circles. It also works as an effective moisturizer and softens the skin. The very composition of Neem helps purify your skin, giving you a luminous glow.
